Key Results Achieved in WP5: Virtual and Real Demonstrations

March 2025

The XL-Connect project, a pioneering European initiative in the field of smart and bidirectional EV charging, has released three critical deliverables that mark a major step forward in integrating electric vehicles with modern energy grids. These documents outline strategic planning, simulation efforts, and real-world demonstrations aimed at optimizing energy flow from grid to vehicle and back.

D5.1: Planning of Virtual and Real-World Demonstration Actions
This deliverable sets the foundation for XL-Connect’s ambitious demonstration activities. It provides an overview of the geographical and grid contexts of each demonstration site and introduces a suite of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for assessing impact. It also maps out the interconnections between virtual simulations and real-world implementations, identifying potential risks and research questions for each demo.

D5.2: Virtual Demonstration Actions
With a focus on innovation through simulation, this deliverable showcases how XL-Connect is developing and testing advanced smart charging and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)/Vehicle-to-Building (V2B) strategies in controlled, virtual environments. These virtual demos enable the project to explore high-volume and complex use cases, offering critical insights into how large-scale deployment could function in real-world scenarios.

D5.3: Real Demonstration Actions
Turning theory into practice, D5.3 details the real-world implementations of the XL-Connect charging solutions. Despite market limitations—such as the scarcity of V2G-enabled vehicles—the project has found creative solutions, including the use of digital twins, emulators, and storage batteries. Each demo site addresses unique case studies, all contributing to smarter energy exchange between vehicles and the grid.

Together, these deliverables highlight XL-Connect’s comprehensive approach to revolutionizing EV integration across Europe, aligning technical innovation with real-world application.
