The XL-Connect project has released a new report analyzing the current practices in electric vehicle (EV) charging adoption and management, with a focus on the potential of smart charging (V1G) and bidirectional charging (V2G) technologies. The report identifies key gaps between the theoretical potential of these advanced charging solutions and their real-world implementation.
The analysis highlights the need for improved interaction between various control systems, from vehicle communication to grid operators, and the necessity to address technical, economic, organizational, and legislative challenges. Among the critical issues identified are battery degradation concerns and the lack of proper economic incentives for end-users.
Despite these challenges, the report finds that most charging solutions are technologically mature and viable for implementation. However, it emphasizes the importance of adopting the latest Combined Charging System (CCS) technologies, including both DC and AC bidirectional charging, to maximize the benefits of V1G and V2G projects.
